Abstract

Illinois State University, sparked by the striking images at the 2009 ADP National Meeting, hosted the Thoughts on Democracy: Reinterpreting Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms Posters Exhibit from February 12 to May 7, 2010. The exhibit included a lecture series of three speakers: “The Impact of Fear on Contemporary Political Dialogue,” “A Manifesto of Power and Ideals: FDR’s Four Freedoms Speech in Historical Perspective” and “Visual Culture and American Modernism in the 1930s and 1940s: Figuration and Abstraction.” We examined how a special effort was made to target the exhibit beyond the traditional social science and humanities audiences for civic and political engagement efforts.
