The Papers of Harry A. Blackmun, Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court (1971 – 1994), provide scholars with a unique glimpse inside the workings of the Court. Housed in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, Blackmun’s caseload files contain all correspondence between the justices, preliminary and bench memoranda, draft opinions, docket sheets, and his notes from oral argument and conference deliberations. Thus they include an almost complete record of the Court’s internal workings during the 1971 – 1993 terms. This material is provided by Dr. Michael Gizzi, who has been archiving material for use in research on the evolution of the Court’s search and seizure jurisprudence and identification of per curiam authorship.
