When Russia attacked the sovereign nation of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, many Ukrainians said goodbye to their homes, their neighborhoods, and quite possibly members of their own family for the very last time. Enter Poland-- a land that truly knows hardship, strife and loss. The good people of Poland took in their Slavic brothers and sisters with open arms. Nearly 6 million people from Ukraine have now become refugees in foreign lands; 2 to 3 million of those refugees took refuge in Poland. As I volunteered at UNICEF, Polish Red Cross, and the Global Expo Modlinska Center in Warsaw during the Summer of 2022, I came to admire the strength, spirit, and stoicism of both cultures. The assimilation and integration of Ukrainian refugees was everywhere. Coffee shops. Parks. Grocery stores. Restaurants. Hotels. Shopping Malls. And, last but not least, the LGBTQIA + community.
