Description
My research focuses on the need for mental health representation and visibility for the Latinx/e community. I emphasize the power of seeing one’s own identity, culture, and struggles reflected on-screen or in print, as representation can affirm a child’s sense of worth and belonging. My research stems from children’s literature and media where I reference Meghann Meeusen’s Children’s Books on the television that underscores how diversity in children’s media validates young audiences, helping them feel seen and valued. Films set in Colombia such as Encanto (2021) beautifully address Latinx/e cultural themes, which included generational trauma and healing that resonated deeply with audiences who identified with those experiences. My work highlights the importance of creating stories that promote transparency and the destigmatization of mental health, fostering more inclusive spaces where Latinx/e individuals, such as myself, are reminded that our identity, cultural background, and existence matters in the world.
