On behalf of Illinois State University, Milner Library invites Illinois PK-12 school librarians, media specialists, and paraprofessionals to attend the Inaugural Central Illinois School Library Censorship Summit on January 9, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the ISU Alumni Center. Areas of focus will include responding to official challenges; addressing collection concerns with stakeholders; writing and editing collection development and reconsideration policies; self-censorship; and educating parents on collection-related issues.

Program Objective

Participants will be able to critically reflect on the current landscape of censorship and book banning in the state of Illinois and learn methods to promote intellectual freedom.

Continuing Education

Teachers in Illinois will be able to claim up to 4 Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDUs) through their Regional Office of Education (ROE).

Registration and Cancellation

There is no cost to attend the Summit, but registration is required for all attendees, speakers, and committee members through the online registration form. The form will close on December 20th, 2022. If you have registered but are unable to attend, please contact ISU Conference Services by emailing Megan at mdrhoa1@ilstu.edu to cancel your registration.

Location

All Summit sessions will be held at Illinois State University Alumni Center (1101 N. Main St, Normal, IL 61790) in Room 118. There is ample free parking located in front of the building.

Food / Beverage

Water and coffee will be available in the morning. A boxed lunch will be provided for lunch. During registration, you will select your box lunch sandwich or wrap option; you can also list any dietary restrictions. Water and soda will be available in the afternoon.
