Abstract
Despite first- and second-generation immigrants making up 19.6% of the U.S. workforce (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024), research exploring their career aspirations is scarce. Studies show that individuals’ cultural backgrounds significantly shape first- and second-generation immigrants' career aspirations, values, and professional goals (Kao, 2004; Polenova et al., 2017). The purpose of the study is to examine how first- and second-generation immigrant emerging adults' cultural backgrounds inform their career aspirations. I utilized a qualitative approach by asking participants about their cultural background, career aspirations, and what influenced their career aspirations. Interviews and a cognitive map activity were conducted to investigate the research questions. The interviews were split into two parts, and the cognitive map activity was placed between them. The results revealed four major themes: family support, cultural expectations and pressures, community impact, and mobility. Findings showed that 11 out of 12 participants reported a connection to their cultural background, with culture playing a role in influencing their career aspirations. The study also demonstrated that cognitive mapping was an effective tool for uncovering both the “what” and “why” behind these influences. The current study extends research on first- and second-generation immigrants in the United States. From an organizational standpoint, these themes can help employers and organizations understand the motivations behind immigrants' career decisions and inform strategies for recruitment and engagement with their workforce. Future research should explore these themes more in depth and explore cases where culture had no or a different influence on immigrants' career aspirations.
