Abstract

This thesis focuses on the synthesis and study of [Re6Se8]2+ cluster complexes containing alkynyl ligands. Previously, our group synthesized Re6 cluster complexes containing σ-bound phenylacetylide ligands, including [Re6Se8(PEt3)5(C≡CPh)](SbF6). The unexpected reactivity of the mono-alkynyl complex with electrophilic reagents prompted us to expand on this chemistry through the synthesis of cluster complexes containing para-substituted phenylacetylide ligands, including [Re6Se8(PEt3)5(C≡C-C6H4-X)](SbF6) (X = NO2, CO2Me, CH3, and OMe). The para-substituent was shown to affect the physical properties, including NMR chemical shifts, electrochemical (CV), and photophysical (emission) properties. Following these studies, we are now interested in the synthesis of [Re6Se8]2+ complexes bridged with para-diethynylbenzene ligands, including [Re6Se8(PEt3)5(C≡C-C6H4-C≡CH)](OTf), [(Re6Se8(PEt3)5)2(C≡C-C6H4- C≡C)](OTf)2, and [(Re6Se8(PEt3)5)(RuCl(dppe)2)(C≡C-C6H4-C≡C)](OTf). These complexes will be utilized for further electrochemical and oxidation studies.
