Abstract
A new exposition of the compositional history, creative process, and early performance history of Benjamin Britten’s only Russian song cycle; Peter Pears’s English-language translation process of Alexander Pushkin’s original poetry; and the performance history of Pears singing the cycle with Britten and pianist Murray Perahia in English around the world.
