Women are a marginalized group of people who see the world differently. Their voices have historically been muted, but one of the ways they have voiced their thoughts and perceptions of the world is through music. My research focuses on the women who make music and what they have to say about being a woman in music. I believe academic research should be easily accessible, so the final product of my research takes the form of a documentary. I interviewed and filmed many female musicians for my documentary and one group that stood out was Emily the Band. Emily the Band defines themselves as an indie alt-pop queer girl group. Their uniqueness of being an all-queer, all-girl group contributes to the complexity of women’s experiences in the music industry.
