Archival and manuscript materials record human experience; they document how people have lived, worked, interacted, and thought about the world. These unique or rare materials make visible the experience and impact of individuals and organizations within their respective cultural, geographical, historical, local, and educational milieu. By exploring such documents and objects, patrons can see and investigate these relationships firsthand. Primary sources form the bedrock of humanistic research, personal inquiry, and engaged teaching. With this volume, we invite you to explore the unique and rare materials housed in Milner Library’s Special Collections and Dr. Jo Ann Rayfield University Archives as well as the services that bring them to life for readers worldwide. Contributed essays from scholars and collection stewards highlight how a small sample of these rich collections facilitate teaching and learning within the Illinois State University community and beyond.

Workflow and Timelines for eTextbook Project
Rachel Park, Rachel E. Scott, Julie A. Murphy, Mallory Jallas, and Anne Shelley
This document was created in 2021 as part of a textbook affordability project at Illinois State University’s Milner Library, in which the project team licensed available e-book copies of course textbooks. This modified version of our workflow and timeline has been generalized so library personnel at other institutions might easily adapt it for their own use. This timeline is built in part around when the textbook list for the upcoming semester is made available (at Illinois State University, our Office of the University Registrar makes textbook information publicly available online midway through the previous semester). The timings listed do not account for semester breaks. The target end date for the timeline is one week prior to the start of the semester.

In the midst of a global pandemic, civil rights reckoning, and fraught election, Milner Library staff continued to go above and beyond providing individualized attention to Illinois State University students while taking unprecedented steps to keep everyone safe. These very challenging circumstances also provided an opportunity to critically assess the library’s relationship with our increasingly diverse patron population both virtually and in person. It is the hope of this report’s many contributors that these efforts can be sustained and further developed in the coming years.

Milner Library Makerspace Working Group Final Report
Chad Kahl
The Makerspace Working Group was created in 2016 with the following charge:
To investigate the development of a makerspace in Milner Library’s uLab space. Specifically, the project team will explore the professional literature, perform a needs assessment, gather feedback from campus and external users and identify potential campus and off-campus partners to define what should be included in the makerspace. The team will produce a schedule for development of the makerspace, ascertain short- and long-term expenses, identify potential staffing and corresponding professional development and training needs, and develop an assessment plan for makerspace usage.
Interest in a potential makerspace grew out of discussions by former Milner Library Dean Dr. Dane Ward with a number of other college deans who approached him about the development of such a campus space in Milner Library. In addition, the library was re-considering the use of the uLab computer lab space which has experienced a precipitous drop in usage—over 88% in the last sixteen years. Since Milner Library was beginning to consider a comprehensive space planning process, the results of the working group will inform that process in FY18. Lastly, campus currently does not provide a centralized developmental support center for students’ use of technology for classroom and extracurricular projects. Typical IT help desk technical support (e.g. configuring email, installing MS Office, removing malware, replacing a broken screen) is provided by the Technology Support Center and TechZone. Their scope does not include instruction on how to use or apply software or specialized equipment.
The working group utilized a design thinking process that stresses iterative and participatory planning. Following this method, the working group developed proposed solutions only after completing a discovery phase that involved considerable information gathering.
