According to a Nov. 1, 1935 profile in The Vidette, he attended ISNU “because of this school’s high scholastic rating,” having “heard of old Normal from [his] uncle” who “was in school here at one time.” He participated in the ISNU marching band for all four years and was president of that organization in 1935 and 1936. Stabenow was also a member of the men’s glee club, Blackfriars, Kappa Phi Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu, and University Club. After graduating in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, Stabenow taught for a time at Kewanne High School in Kewanne, Illinois. He married Daisy Ann Wright in Kahoka, Missouri in 1941 and the couple’s two children were born while they were living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1940s. The family moved several times over the subsequent decades, including to Waddams Grove, Illinois in the 1950s, where Lee worked as a teacher at Lena High School and salesman at a uniform company, and to Kansas City, Kansas in the 1970s.
