Description
Oral history interview with Illinois State Normal University alumni Debra Merriman and William Deemer, Class of 1977. The interview was conducted on October 9, 1982 by Deana Grussemeyer, then a member of the Student Alumni Council.
Deemer and Merriman reflect on their involvement in student government and the emergence of fraternity and sorority rivalry. They recall the controversy surrounding President Budig's house expenditure, along with memories of notable professors like Judy Boyer and Dr. Borden. Extracurricular activities such as basketball games and intramural sports were significant to Deemer, alongside affordable entertainment options like movies at Capen Auditorium and campus concerts.
Tensions between the university and the towns of Bloomington and Normal are discussed, alongside changes in campus boundaries and notable buildings. The interviewees reminisce about humorous events like the proliferation of streakers on the quad during the 1970s and share their disappointment over a student body president's indictment. Merriman recalls the introduction of the first co-ed dormitory floors in Manchester Hall.
