Description

Oral history interview with Illinois State Normal University alum Robert Kaplan, Class of 1976. The interview was conducted on October 17, 1981, by an unidentified interviewer. Kaplan remembers the ISU of 1976 as “a free and easy period” that was also “a time of change at the university.” He recalls the construction of new buildings as well as the streaking craze that swept the campus.

Extracurricular activities played a significant role in Kaplan's college experience. He mentions attending football games primarily for socializing rather than for the sport itself, and participating in the intramural program, which provided opportunities for friendly competition among students. Kaplan was also involved in the student radio station and fondly remembers attending basketball games, particularly during the era of the "Running Redbirds."

Kaplan highlights concerts as major events and describes a disastrous John Denver performance at Horton Fieldhouse. He also recalls the lively atmosphere of dorm parties and visits to local bars, where live music often accompanied social gatherings. One humorous anecdote from Kaplan's time at ISU involves an incident while working at the campus radio station. During his first time reading the news, his script caught fire, leading to a chaotic and comical moment on air.

Kaplan sees the Preview program as a valuable opportunity to share his positive experiences at ISU and to help new students navigate campus life. He describes Kaplan serving as a Preview guide for incoming students as one of his favorite activities.
