Description

Oral history interview with Illinois State Normal University alum Diane (Rezek) Fator, Class of 1968. The interview was conducted on October 29, 1983 by Patty James, then a member of the Student Alumni Council.

Fator reminisces about various aspects of student life at ISU, beginning with the strict regulations imposed on female students, such as “women's hours,” room inspections, and having her skirt length checked before a class. She recalls the transition from President Robert Bone to President Samuel Braden, both of whom she describes as being deeply involved with the student body. Fator fondly remembers the close relationships between students and faculty, highlighting the frequent invitations to professors' homes for academic or social reasons. “It was just like another family, you were just taken in,” she says.

She discusses the academic structure of the university, including the requirement for students to take courses in topics outside their major and the emphasis on “learning how to learn.” Extracurricular activities, such as and campus dances and the Redbird Rooting section at sporting events, were significant social outlets. Fator reflects on the affordability of living expenses, including tuition, room, and board, which were considerably lower compared to contemporary standards. The interview touches on national events like the assassinations of President Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Senator Bobby Kennedy, as well as the Vietnam War era. Fator describes the campus boundaries and recalls a fire at Hewett Hall during her senior year.
