Abstract

Importance of mental health within the agricultural community is growing, especially amongst dairy farmers. With the ongoing trend of negative economic returns facing the dairy industry, there is no better time to address mental health concerns of dairy producers. The goal of this study is to gain insight into the preferred services for mental health assistance amongst Illinois dairy producers. A questionnaire was administered to Illinois dairy producers and analyzed to acquire a greater understanding of this topic. The findings from this study have the potential to assist policy makers and benefit agricultural producers. An overwhelming preference among Illinois dairy producers was speaking to family and friends regarding a mental health-related illness. Enacting programs that educate family and friends on the signs and symptoms of such illnesses, as well as the resources and services available, could allow them to assist dairy producers should the need arise.
