Abstract

Adult undergraduates face many challenges to pursuing higher education and may not be getting the support they need to achieve their educational goals at four-year colleges and universities. This study aims to bring to light their experiences and perceptions of support to promote a better understanding of this diverse undergraduate population. The data for this qualitative study was collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 adult undergraduates at two traditional four-year universities. Purposeful criterion sampling was used to collect the data from the participants via face-to-face and Zoom interviews. Data analysis was done with Delve software to identify themes from the transcribed interviews. Four major themes emerged from the data analysis on how adult undergraduates experience and perceive support: (a) motivation to pursue higher education, (b) supportive networks, (c) institutional support needs, and (d) services and policies tailored to better support adult undergraduates. Motivation as a form of support was expressed in a passion and value for lifelong learning, past personal and educational experiences, and a desire to be role models and inspire others. Participants also noted the important role of supportive networks, namely family, friends, and professors, in providing needed support. Additionally, participants discussed challenges with technology and online learning, as well as a lack of tailored services and resources. Participants desired more tailored services and policies to better support adult undergraduates. These findings highlight the importance of understanding adult learners’ unique needs and experiences to foster supportive environments at traditional four-year colleges and universities.
