Abstract

This poster intends to enrich instructional librarians’ methods and practices for emphasizing the affective contexts of interacting with information. Rather than concentrating on library anxiety, this work is grounded in uplifting a broader spectrum of user emotional capacities, including determination, empathy, grief, and wonder. Specific course-integrated examples, with exhibited representations, will help attendees apply practical classroom exercises: introducing connections to information through close readings of graphic memoir and journalism comics panels; producing personal research disposition collages for a gallery walk; exemplifying the affective journey of acquiring and passing down knowledge using map visualizations. Whether they are run separately or collectively, these recommended mini projects give students an opportunity to reflect upon the emotions that fuel curiosity and arouse passion. By devoting critical attention to the intersections between affective backgrounds and the cognitive and active dimensions of research, instructors develop more conscious, motivated learners.
