Oral history interview with Illinois State Normal University alumnus Mary Etta McManus, Class of 1948. The interview was conducted on October 29, 1983, by Sandi Cupples of the Student Alumni Council.
McManus remembers the hardships she experienced attending university during World War II. Because of rationing, she says, “we just had to go without.” She also discusses the two campus-wide literary societies, Wrightonia and Philadelphia, and the football rivalry between ISNU in Normal and Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

Otto discusses dorm life at ISNU, including the strict curfew in effect for women students, the annual inter-hall stunt show, and watching the Cuban Missile Crisis unfold with her classmates in the lounge. She describes the early 60s as a “growing period” when enrollment doubled and restrictions were relaxed.
