About This Journal

Jeffers Studies seeks to publish scholarship, analysis, and cultural commentary—whatever its critical approach and methodology—that enriches our understanding of the work of the American poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962). The journal is published by the Robinson Jeffers Association and indexed in the MLA International Bibliography.

Jeffers Studies is the successor to the Robinson Jeffers Newsletter, which began publication in 1962 as a project of the Robinson Jeffers Committee, a group formed to promote the study of Jeffers and his work. Melba Berry Bennett, Jeffers’ first biographer, edited the first twenty-two issues of RJN. After her death in the fall of 1968, Robert J. Brophy, Professor of English at California State University, Long Beach, became the editor and served through its 100th issue. Throughout its run, RJN was hosted by Occidental College with Tyrus Harmsen, College Librarian and later Director of Occidental’s Book Arts Program, serving as publisher.

In 1997, following the founding of the Robinson Jeffers Association, RJN was reorganized as Jeffers Studies with Professor Brophy as its founding editor. In 2003 he was succeeded by George Hart, Professor of English at California State University, Long Beach. James Baird, Professor of English at the University of North Texas, became the editor in 2012, and he, with the help of several co-editors, led the journal through 2022.

Initially, Jeffers Studies was published by Occidental College, then subsequently by the Robinson Jeffers Association in conjunction with California State University, Long Beach, with Rob Kafka serving as managing editor. Beginning with Volume 23, the journal is published by Milner Library at Illinois State University on the open access, peer-reviewed journal platform ISU ReD.
