Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence is becoming part of how students study, write, summarize, and prepare for coursework in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). Much of the current discussion in higher education has focused on plagiarism, academic integrity, and responsible technology use. Those concerns matter, but they do not fully address what may be a larger educational issue in professional preparation programs. Students can now generate polished explanations, study materials, treatment rationales, and clinical summaries quickly, sometimes before independently developing the reasoning skills those tasks are intended to build. This paper examines cognitive offloading in CSD education, defined here as the shifting of mental work to an external tool during learning. The concern is premature offloading, where students begin outsourcing synthesis, explanation, interpretation, and clinical justification before developing those competencies independently. This issue may be particularly important in CSD education because students are preparing for professions that depend heavily on individualized interpretation, contextual reasoning, and defensible clinical explanations. The paper discusses how generative artificial intelligence may alter learning behaviors, contribute to an illusion of competence, and reduce opportunities for productive cognitive struggle during professional preparation. Practical instructional implications are discussed, including assignment designs that make reasoning processes more visible while still allowing thoughtful and limited use of artificial intelligence tools.
